Q: I am trying to find the best perm for my coarse hair. I have very thick and coarse sandy red hair. I keep hearing about a perm called PhytoSpecific.
Marsha, Lakeland, FL
Queen Bee says: Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the PhytoSpecific Relaxer System. There are alot of relaxer systems on the market and you have to be careful to choose the right one. Find a reputable salon in your area and seek a consultation. Good luck in your search. Mizani, Design Essential, Essations are a few reliable relaxer systems to work with.
Also, the PhytoSpecific website lists a 1-800 # to find salons and stores that carry their product. You may want to give them a call to find a salon that has experience with their product.
Q: What are hair infusions?
Valerie, Illionois
Queen Bee says: Hair infusions are a strand-by-strand extension procedure that fuses strands of synthetic or human hair to a person's own natural hair. Ideally, the clients' hair needs to be at least 5-6 inches long and it can last up to 3 months before needing to be removed.
Question 2: I am leaving for college in the Fall. Which hairstyle is better for a humid climate, braids (kinky twists) or a sew-in weave?
Della, Atlanta
Queen Bee says: Both are great options for humind weather, but you have to be careful not to over use either method because then you run the risk of damaging your hair follicles. When you permanently damage your hair follicles you lose the chance of regrowth.
If you have natural hair, I would suggest exploring different ways to wear your hair in "natural-friendly styles", such as two strand twists or wearing your natural texture, which is always a great look and is very versatile.
If you have a relaxer, you can explore many curly styles such as having your hair rodded (set on flexy rods) or (two strand twisting the set). Done correctly, the style can last up to two weeks. Or perhaps, a curly sew-in is the look that you prefer. This style is very low maintenance and looks great for Fall.
It really comes down to preference. The most important thing is to maintain your style with the proper hair products and not to neglect your real hair while wearing braids or a weave.
Q: Is there a healthy way to color your hair (lighter) while wearing a relaxer?
Taydra, Decatur, GA
Queen Bee says: The best way to color your hair lighter while wearing a relaxer is to color the hair two weeks after a fresh relaxer (keep in mind the lighter you go the dryer your hair will be), never color your hair before a relaxer, and always allow four to six weeks between the two chemical services. To keep the hair in optimal condition, keep the hair trimmed every six weeks and always use a professional conditioning treatment (weekly conditioning is strongly recommended) while wearing your new color....CONDITION,CONDITION,CONDITION!!
Q: I've always heard that wearing braids gives your hair a chance to relax but it seems that everytime I take out micro braids my hair seems thinner and less healthy. Why is that?
Kelly, Conyers, GA
Queen Bee says: Unfortunately, that is one of the biggest myths were braids are concerned. When wearing braids, there is a signifigant pull on the hair follicles, which is where the hair grows from. After a period of time, the follicle gets damaged from wearing the braids and once the follicle is damanged or if the follicle is dead there is no hair growth. This is why everytime you take the braids down, especially micro braids, your hair is thinner. Usually, major damage occurs around the hairline, which is the weakest area.
